When the first phase of the BBC's landmark building was completed, lead architect Mark Hines researched and wrote his fascinating insight into the history of the building. Our brief was to communicate the extraordinary pace of change, telling the story of the BBC through the building — extravagant and technically years ahead of its time.

As the building adapts to new technologies and needs, this sensitive refurbishment references much of the original design intent, yet is fit for the 21st century. Extensive archive imagery, contrasts with photographer Tim Crocker's elegant contemporary shots — a unique and poignant record of a national institution at work.
